Frequently asked questions
Here are some common questions about Small Module Systems
The small module is first and foremost a food waste management system for homes.
Instead of throwing kitchen waste away, Vaayu helps you manage it right where it’s generated.
And here’s the bonus:
your food waste gets converted into usable cooking gas.
A typical household can generate around 15–20% of its cooking gas requirement from its own daily kitchen waste.
The system is compact enough to fit in most:
Balconies
Utility areas
Small terraces
Bungalows and flats alike
Small waste. Small space. Big impact.
The system has three main parts:
Biogas Digester
A specially designed 200-litre drum where food waste is converted into biogas.
Gas Balloon
The gas produced inside the digester is stored here through a pipeline.
Biogas Stove
A separate burner designed specifically for biogas cooking.
There are also a few supporting components like pipes, valves, and fittings that keep the system running smoothly.
Vaayu loves food waste.
You can add:
Fruit and vegetable peels
Leftover cooked food
Stale fruits and vegetables
Plate waste
Rice, chapatis, flour waste
Starchy kitchen waste
Basically, if it came from the kitchen, there’s a good chance Vaayu can digest it.
What Vaayu does not like:
Dry leaves
Coconut shells and hair
Plastic
Metal
Packaging material
Any non-biodegradable material
Nope — Vaayu is specifically a food waste biogas system, not a garden waste composting system.
Dry leaves break down very differently and are better suited for composting.
The Vaayu Small Module can process up to:
2 kg of mixed kitchen waste per day
Less is perfectly fine.
More than that? Not recommended.
A typical family of 4 usually generates about 1–2 kg of food waste daily, which is ideal for the system.
Preferably not.
Biogas is a living biological system.
Think of it like digestion in the human body — overfeeding creates problems.
Adding too much waste can upset the microbial balance and reduce gas production.
The good news:
you don’t need to weigh your waste every day. After a few days, you’ll naturally get a feel for the right quantity.
That’s completely okay.
Vaayu is designed to manage whatever food waste your home produces. Even smaller quantities help the system stay healthy.
But if you want to maximise gas generation…
…you can become the neighbourhood waste hero. 😄
Many users collect extra food waste from:
Neighbours
Domestic help
Nearby eateries
Local vegetable vendors
The digester comes pre-loaded with a specially developed microbial culture.
These microorganisms (called methanogens) are selected over time from cattle dung cultures and are responsible for converting food waste into cooking gas.
They live inside a slurry medium and begin working once regular feeding starts.
Tiny microbes. Serious work ethic.
As a rough estimate:
1 kg of kitchen waste = up to 20 minutes of cooking time
But remember:
not all waste produces the same amount of gas.
Gas generation depends on:
The type of food waste
Calorie content
Weather conditions
The system is designed for urban homes and fits comfortably in most balconies.
Space required:
6 × 4 feet (if the balloon is ground-mounted)
OR
4 × 4 feet (if the balloon is wall-mounted)
Compact enough for city living.
Daily care is simple:
Segregation of waste. Keep food waste separate
Feed the system regularly
Push the waste down properly
Clean the feeding mouth after use
Use the gas regularly
Small module can give upto 40 mins of cooking time on one burner. So as such it wont make you LPG free other than some exceptional cases.
For an average family small module is designed to offset roughly:
🔥 10–20% of your household cooking gas usage
Your regular LPG setup continues as usual.
Vaayu adds an additional biogas burner for daily cooking support.
The gas travels through a pipe from the digester to the biogas stove in your kitchen.
The final placement of:
Digester
Balloon
Pipeline
…is planned carefully with you to ensure:
Safety
Convenience
Good aesthetics
We know nobody wants ugly pipes running across their home.
Every 4–6 months, some undigested fibrous material needs to be removed from the digester.
Team Vaayu provides:
Scheduled paid servicing
Cleaning support
Maintenance guidance
Some users even learn to do it themselves — we provide training for that too.
Usually, Team Vaayu contacts you around the 5-month mark to schedule servicing.
On the service day:
A technician visits your home
Cleans and services the unit
The removed organic matter can be added directly to soil or garden areas where it gradually turns into nutrient-rich compost.
A little water access and washroom access for the technician is always appreciated.
And yes — servicing during dry weather is usually easier than peak monsoon season.
At present, regular after-sales servicing is available within approximately:
📍 70 km around Pune
Currently, installations are also limited to roughly a 70 km radius around Pune. This is the area where we can provide service support.
We’re growing steadily and hope to expand to more regions soon.
We’d genuinely love that.
Right now, large-distance servicing is still something we’re figuring out. But in certain cases, we can explore customised solutions where:
you manage basic maintenance locally,
and Team Vaayu supports remotely.
